Remote work and Coronavirus seems to be our theme of 2020. Remote work was distracting enough for some people as it was, being so unstructured. Adding COVID-19 to the mix didn’t help any, causing most people around the globe to stare at the news all day for weeks. Needless to say, everyone is stressed out, and trying to stay on track while working from home, near their TVs, kids, pets, and home distractions.
So how do we stay on track during remote work and coronavirus? Let’s start with the obvious.
Remote work and Coronavirus help: the room you work in.
We say it that way for a reason. Plenty of people have found themselves working from the living room couch, the bathroom (when escaping kids), the kitchen table, and more places that may not be the best for a professional adult to be working. So how do we make it better?
First step is simple. Find any room with a lock on it for meetings if youre a parent. If you are not or your kids are old enough to be able to handle being alone for a few minutes, go ahead and try sitting in your car too. If there is no lock and the kids are not old enough, any room with a door will suffice.
If you have the ability, keep one piece of wall blank near an outlet so you can keep your items charged. This will make it easy to hop on video meetings with less hassle. You can focus on wrangling the kids instead. If you can sacrifice the TV or your phone, you may be able to distract them just long enough to get through your 8 am meeting! Remote work and coronavirus won’t be able to beat you!
Remote work and Coronavirus: Stop the distractions
This is a pretty cut and dry one. Set aside time daily, even just an hour while the kids are napping, to turn everything off and focus on nothing but your job. We know how hard this can be. If you have the ability you can also take an hour at a more unorthodox time (like before the morning alarms or after the kids have gone to bed). If you can kick the kids outside to play? All the better! Remote work and coronavirus mean nothing to kids getting exercise in their own yard, right?
Remote work and Coronavirus: Working at the kitchen table
First, if you have made it this far into remote work and Coronavirus without a great pair of noise eliminating headphones or earbuds, we salute you. You must be superhuman, because we don’t know how you manage. Kids throwing things back and forth at each other over the couch while you’re trying to work can be incredibly distracting.
Working at the kitchen table can’t be easy after so long going to an office space. Some people will choose to munch because of where they are sitting. Instead of eating your feelings and regretting it tomorrow, stick it to your cravings with some sugar free gum. That will definitely help prevent the quarantine-15! Remote work and Coronavirus can’t beat you.
Make sure every two hours you take 5 minutes to get up and stretch or walk around the block really quick. You will be stationary for many more hours than you usually are working from home. Stretching and taking short breaks will help you stay on track and curb the distractions.
