Meet My New Boyfriend, Claude AI: An Inside Peek at Anthropic’s Huge Language Model

Hold onto your keyboards! With Sam Altman dropping the bombshell that “ChatGPT 5” isn’t on the horizon… well, let’s just say my coffee went cold.

With the fact that the generative model was originally not meant to turn a profit (and that potentially the company will be bankrupt by 2024 from its $700,000 /day cost to run GPT), those of us who have grown fond of this cognitive computing tool are invested on sitting on the edge of our seats.

But marketers, there is no need to bite your nails! The drama of potentially losing ChatGPT doesn’t have to be at the level of teenage angst. The thing about AI being in an adolescent phase means that we can expect to see many growth spurts and personalities emerge.

Speaking of which, have you all met Claude? Well then, let me introduce you!

    MEET CLAUDE AI

Available in the UK & USA: Claude AI is the new AI assistant created by Anthropic, an AI safety startup founded by former OpenAI researchers. Claude is powered by a large language model called Claude 2.0, which rivals models like GPT-3.5 that drive ChatGPT.

While still in limited beta testing, Claude has already wowed early users with its impressive abilities. So what exactly makes this new AI bot so special?

MASSIVE CONTEXTUAL UNDERSTANDING – Entire Books Summarized

One of Claude’s biggest differentiators is its sheer size. Claude can process an impressive 100,000 tokens at once that’s compared to ChatGPT’s paltry limit of 4,000-8,000 tokens. This gives Claude the ability to handle far more complex prompts, documents, and tasks.

You can upload an entire book into Claude and it can summarize it for you. With ChatGPT, you’d have to break things down into small chunks. For coding tasks, Claude can take in thousands of lines of code for debugging or improvements. This expanded context window is a total game-changer.

ROBUST DOCUMENT HANDLING – Give Claude that .Docx!

Ever tried feeding a machine a document? It’s like teaching a cat to fetch. But with Claude, document integration is a walk in the park. Users can upload files directly within a conversation, and Claude can summarize, analyze, and highlight key information from these documents. This sets Claude apart from other AI bots that struggle to handle raw documents smoothly.

UP-TO-THE-MINUTE KNOWLEDGE – Not So Ignorant

While ChatGPT is limited by its 2021 knowledge cut-off date, Claude has been trained on data and events up until late 2022. This gives Claude more of a scoop and timely knowledge to pull from when answering queries. For things that have happened in the last year, Claude will likely provide better and more relevant responses.

RIGOROUS SAFETY STANDARDS – Constitutional AI

As an AI safety company, Anthropic has taken great pains to ensure Claude operates ethically. Claude uses a technique called Constitutional AI to avoid toxic, dangerous, or discriminatory content. It’s also much harder to “jailbreak” Claude’s safety rules compared to ChatGPT. While limiting, the safety rigor makes Claude suitable for more users.

ENHANCED CODING CAPABILITIES – Computers Begetting Computers

For programmers, Claude offers a big upgrade over ChatGPT. With its huge context window, Claude can handle large chunks of code for a variety of coding tasks like explanations, optimizations, and error-checking. ChatGPT chokes on anything but small amounts of code. Early reviews suggest Claude will be a powerful new coding assistant.

GRADUAL ROLLOUT – Cautious and Controlled

Unlike the frenzied public launch of ChatGPT, Anthropic has gradually rolled out Claude access starting with select users in early 2023. This cautious approach allows them to monitor training and slowly expand access, avoiding some of the issues that have plagued rapid, wide ChatGPT launches.

So in summary, Claude stands out for its huge scope, latest knowledge, document integration, safety assurances, coding skills, and careful rollout. While ChatGPT retains the advantage of wide public access, Claude seems poised to disrupt the AI space as people get access.

And with all these incredible features under its belt, you might wonder: What’s the catch? Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of accessing Claude.

FREEMIUM AND PAID ACCESS – Claude’s Growing Up

In a pivot indicative of most AI chatbots, Claude has started restricting unpaid users to just 50 messages a day. Oof, talk about a teaser!

Simultaneously, Anthropic is surveying users about potential interest in a $50 per month premium Claude. This proposed version promises extras like more daily messages, guaranteed uptime, and other VIP features.

By probing its users directly, it seems Claude is gearing up to refine offerings based on professional reliance. The goal is alignment with those who truly need that gargantuan 100k token contextual understanding.

The big question is how will this pivot resonate with Claude’s existing community? Freemium access has been a hallmark thus far.

One thing is clear – this mirrors the broader trend of conversational AI monetizing through subscription plans, with competitors like ChatGPT and Quora’s Poe charging around $20 per month for premium capacities. As premium Claude rolls out, it may sway businesses on which tool best fits their needs.

The race is on to balance wide access with profitability. But for now, as Claude’s gradually opening up the premium experience while keeping that free taste tantalizing, there are still lots of ups and downs to consider.

SUMMARY+ – Pros and Cons of Claude AI

Of course, no AI system is perfect. While Claude has some standout strengths compared to ChatGPT, it’s important to weigh both the upsides and downsides:

    The Positives:

        • It can count!* (*Better)

        • Feels more human.

        • Free version is decent.

        • You can upload documents!

        • Gradual public rollout allows more control.

        • Length! YAY! A 100k token context window.

        • Can handle long documents for summarization.

        • Advanced safety protocols like Constitutional AI.

        • Better for coding tasks due to large context handling.

        • Detailed summaries to let you know how else it can help.

        • More up-to-date knowledge base (trained up to late 2022).

        • It often gives detailed reasoning for changes it makes to your work.

      The Limitations:

          • Limited availability, waitlist for access in other countries beyond UK & US.

          • If you hit enter too early, there is no canceling the generation.

          • Lacks widespread adoption and community of ChatGPT.

          • Generates nonsense text if given insufficient prompting.

          • Link and website summarization can be inaccurate.

          • Early stage means more potential bugs and quirks.

          • Strict safety limits some possible applications.

          • Early Access Mode: limited messaging.

As with any new technology, the true capabilities and limitations of Claude will become clearer over time as more people get access and put it to the test. So, where does all this leave us in the grand scheme of AI evolution? Time for the final judgment!

        THE VERDICT

Claude AI represents an exciting new challenger to the space race to AI dominance. Backed by AI safety experts Anthropic, Claude offers an enticing mix of massive scope, timely knowledge, and rigorous ethics.

While ChatGPT retains first-mover advantage, limitations like its 2021 knowledge cut-off leave an opening for new AI like Claude to leapfrog its capabilities. As Claude rolls out more widely, it seems poised to go toe-to-toe with ChatGPT as a next-generation conversational AI.

For now, Claude remains in limited access beta testing. But its initial reception indicates Anthropic has built something special that can push the boundaries of what AI assistants can handle. With Claude entering the chatbot arena, generative AI keeps getting smarter. The AI arms race is on and Claude looks ready to compete.

As for me? I would be lying if I didn’t say I was thinking about breaking up with GPT for this new model. Claude just gets me, ya know?
