Marketing For Nonprofits 101: Helpful Hints and Tips

marketing for nonprofits

Marketing for nonprofits is not the most difficult thing in the world. There are a plethora of ways to do marketing for nonprofits and even save money while doing so. Never fear, we are here to explain some of the ways to help your nonprofit marketing.

Google for Nonprofits

Google marketing for nonprofits is an amazing program. Offering 10 thousand dollars worth of marketing tools for free to users per month for registered 501(C)(3)s across America, it is probably the best and largest marketing for nonprofits program out there at the time this article was written.

Bryan Shue, of Fullmoon Digital, explains the program like this: “Google is giving you 10K in cash, but this money can only be used to bring in new customers to your nonprofit. How do you bring in new customers? Well, you run advertisements.” Marketing for nonprofits is best done by professionals (like us! Marketing for nonprofits: tools of the trade

So what tools make marketing for nonprofits easier? Ten thousand dollars in ad credits and a custom G-suite helps for sure. Along with other apps that may be too expensive for a nonprofit organization, Google for nonprofits covers those things. The only catch with Google Grants (Google Adwords) is that the ads are text only.

If getting people to your website is a top goal for you, using Google Grants (Adwords) is a necessity. Many of the apps given from this will continue to work to help you, even if you forget about them after initial set up.

The best part of Google Adwords is the ability to go for super specific niches with your keywords. Google is full of endless possibilities. Marketing for nonprofits has never been easier or less time consuming. The application may take a while to complete but it is clearly worth the time.

YouTube for Nonprofits

YouTube also supports marketing for nonprofit organizations through their nonprofit program. For channels with one thousand plus subscribers, you get access to YouTube Spaces, professional production studios around the globe.

YouTube for Nonprofits also allows you to put “donation cards” on your videos anywhere to help increase donations. One more very helpful tidbit from YouTube is zero transaction processing fees for donations. Finally you also can drop links anywhere on your videos.

Using YouTube to process donations will get rid of the 2.9% and $0.30 fee that other processors will charge on your donations.

Google One Today

Google One Today is a pay-it-forward app that allows people to choose a nonprofit a day to make a donation to. It also will help increase your nonprofit’s visibility.

Can anyone not use the tools for marketing for nonprofits?

Yes. Government entities and organizations, public libraries, and 501(c)(4)s may not use Google for Nonprofits. Schools, colleges/universities, academic institutions, and childcare centers need to use Google for Education, which uses many similar apps as Google for Nonprofits. There is, however, no healthcare version of Google for Nonprofits.  The only big difference is a HIPAA-compliant version of the G-Suite.

Community grassroots organizations with 501(c)(3) status may apply, along with philanthropic arms of academic institutions. If you are unsure, you can always apply anyway and let Google tell you yes or no.

The application takes less than ten minutes. You can find it here.
