What is Juneteenth, and why does it matter?
Juneteenth is a lesser-remembered day by those whose ancestors were not enslaved in 1865. The day is a celebration of the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas.
On June 19th, 1865, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger traveled into Galveston Texas. He read the Emancipation Proclamation to the last slaves of the confederacy, bringing them freedom about 2 and a half after the original signing of the proclamation. Just because President Lincoln had declared slaves freed did not mean that was always what slave owners did. Many slave owners continued to not tell their slaves about their freedom.
It took more than two years for the last slaves in deep Texas to find out that they had been freed for two years.
Not everyone was free on July 4th, 1776
Not everyone was free on America’s Independence Day. At that time, people were still being ferried into the United States, separated from their families, and sold off on wood blocks like animals. They were not, and have not been equals since they first were forced to step foot on this continent.
It is important that we recognize the suffering of the Black community and their celebration of Juneteenth. It is important that we recognize as a society all the ways we have harmed our Black brothers and sisters. Juneteenth is an opportunity to recognize the suffering their community has been caused over the last few hundred years, and at the very least support them in their struggle for real equality and true justice for all.
Fullmoon Digital is happy to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday..
And do our best to support the Black community in every endeavor of equality. We are proud to be minority-owned and mostly minority-operated. We are proud of our peaceful protestors. We are proud to be American, and we will stand for justice for all.
