Improving in Lockdown: 5 Things to Keep You Busy and Focused

Improving in lockdown is probably on some people’s minds wen they get bored. Here in the New York/New Jersey area, things have been shut down and quiet for about a week. In California, it is the same story. People are bored and already getting tired of sitting at home doing nothing or just focusing on their kids. With social distancing becoming the standard everywhere, we looked to find things that you can do from home to keep your mind busy and help you keep improving in lockdown while we ride out this pandemic.

Improving in Lockdown

#1. Take a course on LinkedIn Learning

Yes, yes. It costs money. Unfortunately, improvement and education aren’t always free (luckily this is our most expensive suggestion). With courses for your creativity and technology or for improving your business, there is something for everyone. They usually consist of a few hours of video instruction, and we all know that we’ve got plenty of free time now.

#2. Get Your Workout Shoes on

The Gold’s Gym app (Goldsamp) is free until the end of May, Planet Fitness is doing live work-out videos on their Facebook at 7 PM EST every day. Now that most of us are skipping that daily commute we have an extra hour to go for a walk or run outside where weather permits. Core Power Yoga is doing some free classes online too, so we can all keep improving in lockdown (at least physically!). Keep that amazing body you have been working so hard on in shape and ready for anything.

#3. Learn a New Language

Learning a language is a challenge that takes a little commitment but can be incredibly rewarding. Duolingo is a free app available to teach you a new language as efficiently as possible. Give yourself just 15 minutes a day to practice. So take your phone into the bathroom with the snacks you are hiding from the kids (we see you, mom!) and say “bonjour” to a world of opportunity! At least you will be ready to jet off with your new language skills if this lock down ever ends.

#4. Learn a New Skill

I know that I can’t be the only person who can’t cook. I personally have managed to burn spaghetti in boiling water. Luckily, BBC and many cooking channels and magazines (Food Network, Better Homes & Gardens, Pioneer Woman, etc.) have tons of recipes to practice with online if you can get your hands on all the ingredients. Many skills have tutorials on YouTube as well, so you could learn a skill like calligraphy. Also, keep in mind that there are lots of skills you could make some money off of in the future!

#5. Free Ivy League Courses are Available Online

Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and other Ivy League universities are offering free online classes in a multitude of fields from computer science to writing. All 8 Ivy League colleges are offering a variety of courses that can be viewed at https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/ivy-league-free-online-courses-a0d7ae675869/
