Independent Media Agencies: Not Dead. Just Getting Dangerous.

Here’s the thing: while the big-name media behemoths were busy patting each other on the back, building castles of bureaucracy, and inventing new acronyms for the same tired playbook — a different kind of beast was quietly sharpening its teeth.

The independent media agency.

Yeah, we’re still here. And spoiler alert: we’re thriving. Not because we play by the rules — but because we never liked them in the first place.

Big Isn’t Better. It’s Just… Big.

The holding companies want you to believe scale equals power. But let’s get real — “scale” too often translates to bloated teams, slow decisions, slow responses, recycled thinking, and layers upon layers of approval hell. It’s like trying to do the cha-cha in a straightjacket.

Meanwhile, independents are out here dancing circles around the suits. Nimble. Ruthless. Creative as hell. We move fast, think fresh, and care about one thing: results. Not awards. Not internal politics. Just cold, hard business outcomes.

What is the best part of being an Indie?

We answer to no one. We are not beholden to any investors or board members who have misaligned interests. We work with clients freely and execute on ideas that are brave and challenge the status quo. Being independent is a signal that anything is possible in a way that keeps brands moving at the speed of culture, visible, and moving forward  – and it’s all because we all live the true spirit of partnership.

What are indicators of great client partnerships?

This seems obvious – communication. It is important to have open discussions about what’s doing well, what isn’t working, and ways forward. Being a communication-centric indie agency fosters a healthy partnership, growing our business, and earning brands’ trust.

What made you Indie? What keeps you Indie?

Being Indie is just who we are, both in ownership and in spirit. When Full Moon was founded, it was originally just myself. I set out to build a 100% remote borderless team – focusing on talent, rathe than physical limitations. The world wasn’t asking for another huge advertising agency. We are Indie because that’s what makes us happiest. We are free to do what the market needs. Let’s even the odds. And then stack them in your favor.

What makes you most proud?

I’m proud of how far we’ve come as an agency. We’ve been through the toughest economic challenges, industry turbulence, and manage to emerge stronger with battle scars to show for it. I’m proud of our reputation and trust our clients place in us.
